Nestled in the heart of Victoria, just two hours northeast of Melbourne, Lake Eildon is a unique oasis for houseboat enthusiasts. As the only inland waterway in the state where houseboats are permitted to operate, this expansive lake has cultivated a thriving houseboat culture, boasting over 700 private vessels that call its waters home. With its sprawling 780 km shoreline dotted with hidden coves and serene bays, the lake offers a playground for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. An average depth of 24 metres and a maximum depth of 79 metres create an environment ideal for houseboats, where families and groups can immerse themselves in the unique charm of life on the water.

In 2006, Darren Withoos and John Gysberts founded Status Luxury Houseboats, driven by a shared ambition to redefine luxury houseboat manufacturing floating penthouses,’ Status Luxury Houseboats . With decades of experience, they are among the longest-serving houseboat builders at Lake Eildon and have earned multiple industry accolades, cementing the company’s reputation as a leader in innovation and craftsmanship.
Known as ‘floating penthouses,’ Status Luxury Houseboats are an unmistakable presence on the lake. Each vessel is individually handcrafted to the owner’s specifications, using premium materials and expert detailing.
Featuring gourmet kitchens, multiple bedrooms—each with an en-suite high-end finishes, including underfloor heating, expansive decks and hot tubs, these floating penthouses offer the sophistication and comfort of a five-star hotel—enhanced by the tranquillity of nature.
Spacious top decks provide panoramic views of the lake, complete with barbecue facilities, lounge areas and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. Each vessel is a masterpiece of modern engineering and elegant design, redefining luxury on the water.
Darren describes this philosophy: “Luxury houseboat design merges skilled trades with high-end materials and interior finishes, advanced marine engineering and high tech accessories. Every vessel is built with precision, ensuring it is functional, efficient and stylish. Technology enhances our work, creating layouts that maximise living space while maintaining expansive outdoor areas.”

The company’s recent “super houseboats”, measuring 18.29 x 7.23 metres and weighing in at nearly 60 tonnes, are among the most distinctive vessels on the water. Each build is tailored to suit the owner’s lifestyle, from layout preferences to material selection, ensuring that every detail reflects their needs and personality.
“We are continually exploring new technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of our houseboats,” says Darren. “Our goal is to combine sustainability with luxury, creating a seamless experience for owners while respecting the natural environment.”

Each vessel is designed to be self-sufficient, generating electricity and managing water resources efficiently. Advanced water filtration, solar energy and intelligent climate control are integrated to optimise performance and sustainability.
Solar panels are strategically installed on the hardtop roof areas, harnessing clean energy to minimise reliance on traditional power sources. Additionally, an innovative air-conditioning system enhances energy efficiency by drawing water from the lake and spraying it onto the marine window panels, naturally cooling the interior in an environmentally responsible manner.
These robust vessels are built to last for generations, featuring a full steel structure, solar-powered lithium battery systems and Volvo or Mercury propulsion. A diesel generator backup ensures reliable performance in all conditions, providing added security and peace of mind.
Designed for both relaxation and adventure, each houseboat includes a transom step for easy access to water sports gear, tenders, jet skis and fishing equipment.
Whether it’s an early morning fishing trip, an afternoon of wakeboarding, or a sunset cruise on a tender, these vessels offer the perfect blend of luxury and recreation.
The two most recent builds have involved collaboration with master shipwrights, Composite Constructions and Sykes Rowing. Key outsourced components include aerodynamically curved bulwarks, flybridges, roof decks and hardtops.
Sykes Rowing, based in Geelong, has been manufacturing elite rowing boats since 1966, supplying industry-leading designs to both Olympic and grassroots athletes. Their expertise in precision manufacturing lightweight laminates has enabled the introduction of new capabilities in houseboat construction.
In collaboration with Composite Constructions, Sykes used their large-format 5-axis CNC machine to produce foam-core structures from GURIT Kerdyn® recycled PET foam, based on CAD models supplied by Status Houseboats’ designers and marine architects. Sykes then incorporated subdermal reinforcements and fixing elements into these cores before applying a protective, smooth outer skin of fiberglass and polyester resin. The surface was lightly sanded to achieve the desired finish, followed by the application of a Scott Bader primer prior to delivery. Upon receiving the components, the Status team verified the alignment of the CAD-designed facades before painting to protect against the elements and ensure a durable finish.

This three way collaboration has redefined houseboat construction, merging cutting-edge marine and composites technology with traditional shipbuilding craftsmanship.
Sleek exterior styling, contemporary curves and refined finishes create an aesthetic high-end residential experience. Interior layouts are designed for both function and style, with open-plan living areas that maximise natural light and ventilation. Expansive rooftop terraces provide additional space for relaxation, complete with lounges, sun decks and entertainment systems.
