GOTAFE launches surfcraft manufacturing apprenticeship course

13 December 2016

GOTAFE has partnered with Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) and Composites Australia to launch a new trade qualification for the composites sector.

The new Certificate III in Engineering - Composites Trade supports the surfboard and similar watersport industries providing employers with access to government-funded apprentice training and candidates with the knowledge and skills to make high quality boards in an industry that is an Australian cultural icon.

GoTAFE’s Brett Ambrosio said the initiative was in response to identified industry training needs and will provide apprentices with the knowledge and skills using cutting-edge composite materials and construction methods that will be transferrable to other composite sectors.
The course provides hands-on training in:
• Lay-up
• Selection and use of materials and components
• Handling, using and storing materials, components, tools and equipment
• Repairs and modifications
• Adjusting resin chemicals for different products and conditions
• Selection and use of a range of joining techniques.

Mr Ambrosio said apprenticeships were available in several states including Victoria and NSW. In all other states Government funding options may apply.
