Much of what we’ve learnt from composite materials and technologies is by watching and studying their performance and behaviours.

Each of the two days of the 2018 Advancing Composites Innovation Conference will feature several demonstrations showing the capabilities of the technology of composite material inputs and processes including, but not limited to, real-time closed moulding demonstration using a number of resin systems; adhesive and bonding systems, mould release agents and technologies; and many more.





Confirmed demonstrations 

1) The Importance of Achieving Consistent Fibre/Resin Volume Ratio During Fabrication 

by Dr Rik Heslehurst of Heslehurst and Associates Pty Ltd

To highlight the effects of pre-mixed resin/fibre weight ratios, and bleed schedules on the structural performance, weight and thickness of composite components through component fabrication, measurement and review of past mechanical testing results. Rik will demonstrate:

1. Wet-out resin cloth
2. Laminate 6 ply cloth stack
3. Apply 6 bleed schedules
4. Vacuum bag
5. Cure under heat at 80 degC
6. Using pre-prepared samples identify failure mode changes, weight, thickness, strength and specific strength variations
7. Share the results

Heslehurst and Associates is a consulting company that provides technical and engineering advice to the composites industry as required.  Such advice is a general determination of engineering properties, design performance, effects of manufacturing methods on performance outcomes, understanding and resolving design and manufacturing problems. 2) Composites Adhesives –  Bonding to a Range Of Substrates

This demonstration will feature the application of the three main adhesives used in bonding and sealing applications across  the composites fabrication / assembly industry  MMA ( Methylmethacrylate )   MS ( Modified Silane )  PU ( Polyurethane ). Kevin’s demonstration will feature the application of these adhesives to the various substrates stated below. 

  1. Fibreglass to fibreglass
  2. Fibreglass to timber
  3. Fibreglass to steel
  4. Fibreglass to aluminium
  5. ABS to fibreglass
  6. ABS to steel
  7. ABS to timber
  8. ABS to aluminium
  9. Carbon Fibre to aluminium

3) Vacuum Infusion Process
by allnex and Tricomposite

This live demonstration of the Vacuum Infusion Process (from start to finish)  will demonstrate the versatility of the manufacturing method using a closed mould system featuring a base mould and counter mould that is sealed using vacuum pressure.

It will feature the fabrication of a Tricomposite caravan part using a DCPD Ortho blend infusion resin developed by allnex for A class auto parts. Ortho resins offer a cost/performance benefit with good mechanical properties and secondary bonding characteristics.  The blend has been formulated to produce a superior cosmetic finish with less print-through and distortion on finished parts.

4) Ease of Working and Creating with A1 Water Based Resin
by Mr Mani Sampaio of Australian Composite Solutions

This demonstration will feature A1 or Acrylic One which is a two component system consisting of a mineral powder and an acrylic water-based resin which creates a very durable product. The product is increasingly being used for replica building materials including panelling, facades and concrete lookalike. Creative applications also include architectural sculptures and decorative building and frameworks.

Its user friendly characteristics include a lack of solvents and therefore few, if any odours; no special equipment is required during use or personal protective clothing and there is no shrinkage. End products are UV stabilized and resistant to fire (certification Fire Classification B-s1, d 0) and weathering.

5) Cure Monitoring in the Manufacturing Environment
by Dan Naiker, allnex & Andrew Gillen, NETZSCH Australia

NETZSCH and allnex will carry out an in-situ cure monitoring experiment at room temperature using a fast cure pre-accelerated, white, nonthixotropic DCPD modified unsaturated polyester resin together with the NETZSCH DEA288 Dielectric Analyser. An IDEX 115/35 DEA sensor connected to the DEA288 will be coated with a mixed allnex 2 component resin prior to the start of curing. The DEA288 will be programmed to track the progress of curing from start to end over a 45 minute period using a multiple frequency scan. As the sample is tracking to full cure, discussion will be held on the principle and applications of the DEA technique and the benefits/application of the fast curing resin system. A fully evaluated curve of a prior measurement on the same material will be evaluated to demonstrate the important parameters including onset of cure, reactivity, degree of cure, gelation time using the Dielectric Analysis technique.
