Outlook for the economy and markets

David de Garis, Director, Economics, Markets Corporate & Institutional Banking, National Australia Bank

Abstract

David will present his view on the prospects for the Australian and global economies and financial markets information for which has been derived from a combination of top-down macro data and feedback from clients among the NAB’s business franchise.

He will explore how financial markets are responding to events in real time and outline prospects for growth, interest rates and developments in the foreign exchange market, including prospects for the Australian dollar in the near future.

Bio

Dave is Director, Economics for the Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities business at NAB. He loves speaking with the Bank’s business customers, getting the latest from farmers, manufacturers, miners, from tourism operators, the education sector, importers, the property industry and more.  He’s been a regular traveller to other capital cities and all corners of the country.  He says that keeping in touch with business across Australia keeps him in touch with the heartbeat of the economy and how it’s travelling. 

Many will know Dave, through his work in the media.  He’s writes for the Bank’s morning Markets Today and early-morning market Podcast and for NAB’s other research and called upon his views.  He speaks regularly with the financial media.  He has appeared on Sky Business, ABC, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, as well as with regional TV and what remains of the print media. 

Earlier in his career, he spent over a decade in Canberra, finishing his time there as a senior economic adviser in the then Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
