"App" for Composites: The Laminates Calculator!
(Available now at the iTunes Store!)

Empowering Businesses to select and price composite laminates from their iPhone.

Just released is a free iPhone App called TLC – The Laminates Calculator.  This is the world’s first App designed to promote the composites industry and make business easier for manufacturers worldwide. The App, which is free to download from the Apple App Store, was developed by Colan Australia, Oceania Composites Engineering and Pacific Resins. It is believed to be the first of its kind in allowing users to build laminates from over 30 pre-loaded resins and reinforcement records. It also allows unlimited user defined material records.  Laminates built from ply layers can be amended dynamically when needed and can be saved or e-mailed, making it simpler to construct and cost actual laminates.

It's ideal for mainstream fabricators.  This App is very easy to use and comes complete with worldwide contact information, to allow users to contact their local material supplier directly from the application.

Swarbrick & Swarbrick Yachts (Henderson, WA) helped create the colossal new sculpture representing St George & the Dragon, which is now installed on St George's Terrace in Perth (photo below).
The sculpture's billow-form cloak is made from the same hybrid composite technology used to make aircraft, and was sculpted by CNC router robots at Glenn Swarbrick’s factory.
The cloak was so big (18-metres) it had to be created in four sections using robot-cut polystyrene moulds. The full story is featured in the October issue of the Composites Australia "Connection" magazine, and the presentation given by Glenn Swarbrick at CA's September Trade Night about the making of this cloak can be seen here.

PREVIOUS CONFERENCE REPORT:
The 2010 Conference (29th - 30th April 2010, at The Stamford Grand Hotel, Adelaide, South Australia) was a great success.
This was the first year of the new timetable for this event, wherein a stand-alone conference is held in alternating years with the conference plus trade show format. For 2010, practical demonstrations, workshops, tutorials and a factory tour made up the programme along with presentations. The number of attendees was almost identical to the number of delegates in 2009. It is clear the event has support from industry and continues to serve a worthwhile purpose for those who attend.  The delegates represented some 100 companies or organisations, from all states of Australia and from eight other countries. Photos and a full report were published in the June 2010 Composites Australia magazine, and will also be available on the conference website: www.compositesconference.com
